What Our Clients Say…

“I enlisted the help of Urban Oasis after I saw the results of a neighbor’s yard a few door down. Mike was quick to set up our first meeting to review yard and deck work, and a few weeks later got to work on the landscaping. Urban Oasis started on time and ended on budget. The competitive advantage this company brings is in their dedication to do the job right and to pay attention to the details. They are also very clean – tools were removed from the job site every day, construction materials were neatly stacked and driveway/walkway hosed-down to remove any dirt or mud. It was always safe to walk around at the end of the day, or to let my dog roam the yard. And in the end, I loved the results! I highly recommend Urban Oasis…”

“Renovations are always challenging but this went quite smoothly and I am very pleased with the result. Mike is plain spoken, honest and easy to work with. He understood my vision of what I wanted in my yard and had wonderful creative solutions to bring it to life. They put up with my irritable neighbors and my few small project changes without batting an eye. Costs were laid out clearly and easy to understand. The project came in slightly over budget due to some changes that I initiated, and some unforeseen challenges, but extra costs were more than fair. I would recommend Urban Oasis Developments highly”

I am thrilled to have a beautiful backyard to enjoy this summer thanks to Urban Oasis. Mike was a pleasure to deal with and his crew did an amazing job on our yard. They were very efficient and made sure things were done right. I also was impressed at how they tidied up at the end of each day before leaving. I would not hesitate to recommend Mike and his crew to anyone looking to do any landscaping projects.

Landscape Design – five Hardscaped features

A beautiful landscape design incorporates both hardscapes and softscape features. Despite being polar opposites, these two elements work together when they are delicately balanced. To design the yard of your dreams, you should understand the difference between these two landscape features and how they add elegance to your yard. The hardscape in a landscape refers to its “hard” features. Stone, gravel, and wood make up the heavier, inanimate objects that are permanent.  Your softscape means the vegetation in your landscape that is “soft” and alive. A permanent feature, such as evergreens and shrubbery, or a temporary, such as perennials include in softscape. A few examples of softscapes are Trees, Shrubs, Grass, Flowers, Vegetable Plants, and Mulch. In this article, we will discuss different hardscape features.

Pergolas

Pergolas are freestanding structures commonly found within backyard landscapes. In your outdoor living space, you can use them as shade on patios, decks, cooking stations, or entertaining areas. Pergolas usually have four open sides and a slated roof. A pergola may be made from cedar, pressure-treated wood, or vinyl.

The value is dependent on the overall condition of the pergola, which depends on the materials used in its construction. All three types of materials would work perfectly in Calgary. Vinyl is a better choice, however. It comes with the advantage of virtually maintenance-free nature and a good choice of colors, although it is more expensive than cedar or pressure-treated wood.

Pergolas are often used for social gatherings, so you shouldn’t limit yourself to just daytime events.

Outdoor fireplaces

In addition to wood framing, the fireplaces are constructed of fireproof materials like cement board and feature either gas fireplace inserts or wood-burning inserts. Cultured stone is used for the exterior. For design continuity, the cultured stones incorporate different capstones and hearthstones. The result is a very low-maintenance exterior for these structures. The stone finish compliments most of the Calgary home designs by using the same stone that is on the home. A fireplace adds warmth to the garden, allowing you to enjoy the garden in the evenings and at any time of year.

Decking

The natural beauty of wood or composite decking enhances outdoor seating areas in a way that concrete cannot. It can be used with any architectural style and blends in with most environmental conditions. Decks can be used to install outdoor kitchens to enjoy cooking in Calgary’s summer. They add an elite look to your outdoor landscape design.

Outdoor Grills

It is one of the most popular amenities of a yard to have a grill or charcoal barbecue. In the case of periodic outdoor cooking, a smaller stand-alone model should suffice. For serious grillers, choose a model with built-in cabinets and extensions for extra cooking and prep space.

A theater with stereo and sound systems

You can build a small theater around your pool area or outdoor dining space. It can be equipped with a special sound system or simple Bluetooth speakers can work great. A weatherproof ethernet cable and a wall where the movie can be projected are all you need.
