Year-round landscape maintenance in Calgary

Have you ever noticed how some yards look good in any season? Despite winter’s chill, some yards are dressed beautifully – whether it be a finely manicured landscape or a less formal garden. Does each of these yards have a gardening master? Maybe not, but one thing all of them have common is year-round maintenance (not accounting for three feet of snow – this is Calgary after all!)

Whatever your style of DIY lawn care is or, whether you prefer to hire a professional, you need to make sure you follow a seasonal schedule and do the right things when the time is right for healthy lawns and lush landscapes.

Maintaining the lawn:

Keeping a lawn care checklist helps you remember the following tasks for lawn maintenance.

Mowing each week

A neglected or overgrown lawn will create a negative first impression for any Calgary home landscape.

Brush away leaves, clippings, and debris

Make sure your property isn’t cluttered with grass clippings, leaves, and stray flowers. Calgary windy winters can bring down a lot of leaves.

Trimming Curbs and Beds

Adding an edge to your lawn makes it look tidy and sharp, as well as gives it a neat appearance.

Pick up of trash and debris

To maintain a beautiful lawn, it is vital to pick up fallen branches and litter every week.

Aerating, fertilizing, and seeding

They play a significant role in maintaining a lush lawn. Make sure you check the soil pH on an annual basis to make sure of the need for lime. Do a soil test before spring. This can be done yourself with a soil testing kit or you can have a pro come out and do it. Hire a professional, like our team at Urban Oasis Dev. Calgary, to provide advice on how to improve your lawn, garden, or landscape before the growing season begins. The rule of thumb for lawns is to test healthy grass every three to four years, and problem spots once a year.

Maintenance of shrubs and trees

Pruning regularly

Branches or stems that are dead or overgrown are pruned. It is important to prune shrubs and trees regularly to keep them at a size that is safe for visitors and attractive to the eye. The winters in Calgary are long and chilly. During the storm, oversized branches of trees may fell off and can cause damage.

Check for pests and diseases regularly.

Trees and shrubs should be inspected for apparent insects or diseases that may damage them.

Care for your flower bed

If you fail to attend to your colorful flower beds regularly, they will quickly become an eyesore and mar the appearance of your property.

Deadheading

It will help to keep a bed looking fresh to remove old, withered flowers regularly, so new blooms can grow.

Remove weeds regularly.

To ensure that your flower beds stay healthy and beautiful, you must keep weeds under control.

Water accordingly.

Your plants need to be watered regularly if they are to thrive. In times of drought, be water conscious. Ask us about landscaping design that can handle a dry summer and fall like Calgary had in 2021.

Take care of any hardscape repairs

Don’t delay repairing your hardscape features if the seasons’ wear and tear have taken its toll. Be sure to repair fences, broken trellises, and arbors as soon as possible as well as to note any larger repairs that need to be done to stone or concrete walls, water features, patios, etc. Work that needs to be hired out should be scheduled before the busy spring and summer seasons begin. As hardscape and landscape design specialists, we are always happy to help with repairs or new ideas.
